Professor Gary Gerstle is the author of the brand new book, The Rise and Fall of the Neoliberal Order. Gary Gerstle FBA (born 1954) is an American historian and academic. He is the Paul Mellon Professor of American History at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Sidney Sussex College.
In this podcast, we discussed his previous book, The Rise and Fall of the New Deal Order, how the New Deal political consensus gave way to neoliberalism, how neoliberalism triumphed in subsuming both major parties on both sides of the Atlantic – hitting it’s true stride with the election of messers Blair and Clinton in 1997 and 1992, and the ways in which this political consensus is coming to an end with challenges from the left and right in the form of Corbyn, Sanders, Trump and Brexit.
